Personal Stories

Jackie R.
  • “I’m someone who’s afraid of getting a tooth pulled. So when I was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer in 2012, I was terrified of the cancer treatments I faced, never mind the disease I was up against. But the doctors and nurses at Sturdy were so comforting, informative, helpful, and caring, making the treatments seem like not a big deal, that I was never worried or scared. I’m so thankful I met this team. With the exception of one very specialized surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, I had all my treatments—chemo, radiation, and surgery—at Sturdy. I had such a good experience at Sturdy that I became a volunteer in the Oncology Department, so I can help comfort patients in the way their staff comforted me.” – Jackie R.

  • “Last year, out of the blue, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in my lungs, spine, and pelvis. I was so scared; the idea of treatments like chemo terrified me. But my nurses at Sturdy prepared me and eased my concerns. I developed personal relationships with other patients and with staff and really started to enjoy going there and seeing friends. It’s comforting having a local support system like this. It’s a team effort—my oncologist, Dr. Croopnick, manages my care and coordinates any specialized treatments I need with Dana Farber. I have my friends, family, and cancer care team close by, right where I need them.” – Jean Niven Lenk, author of Fertilizer Happens: A Pastor’s Faith, Calling, and Journey with Cancer

  • “I can’t say anything negative about the care I received at Sturdy for my throat cancer. Everyone is so caring and made me and my wife feel special. It’s so nice not having to go to Boston and waste time traveling; treatment is never interrupted and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Sturdy is our family.” – George B.

  • “I was treated at Sturdy for inflammatory breast cancer and as of summer 2014, I am more than one-year cancer-free. This is actually kind of bittersweet because I miss seeing the nurses at Sturdy. I couldn’t ask for better nurses—they’re phenomenal.” – Alyssa P.

  • “I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2007. What has helped me get through long and rigorous treatments and recovery is a positive attitude, courage, and inner strength as well as the blessings, love, and encouragement from my family and the family I have at Sturdy. My very special friends at Sturdy have also been my support group—I love them all.” – Sue S.

  • “I received my radiation treatment at Brigham and Women's/Sturdy Memorial Radiation Oncology Center in Mansfield. It’s close and convenient, which really helped when I was getting treatment every day for seven weeks. The friendly nurses and staff that got to know me quickly through one-on-one interactions, versus the busy, business-like environment you might find in Boston. They’re organized and always on time. It was a great experience.” – Mary D.
